As isolated as Perth is on the western side of Australia, it is one of the country’s best kept secrets and an ideal location for your next campervan hire trip.
After just a few days of coastal sunsets, unspoiled beaches and winery tours, you’ll find yourself feeling as laidback as the locals. We’ve made a list of some of our favourite spots for a campervan hire tour of Perth.
Fremantle is about half an hour from the Perth CBD and this old colonial port is a great stop for the history buffs and market fiends among you.
The city was ranked number 7 above Rome, on Lonely Planet’s best cities in the world, thanks to its restaurants, arts, historic homage and lively culture.
One of the great highlights of Fremantle is the Fremantle Prison, built by convicts in the 1850s. The prison is open for tours with original cells that have been preserved and the opportunity to tour the underground tunnels by boat.
If you’re feeling particularly brave, there is a night Torch Light tour that will give even the toughest traveller a fright.
Delicious food, BYO wine, pumping music, late night shopping… and great vibes! Yep, it’s another Friday night at the Fremantle Markets! BYO from 4pm and DJ from 6pm. Grab the family or some friends, and join us for dinner next week to check it out. #thepeoplemakethemarket #Fremantle #seeaustralia #whatsonwa #perthtodo #experienceperth #thisiswa #perthfood #tastewa #freolife #freo #freofood
You can give the campervan a break for the day while you tour Fremantle and easily explore the city on foot with its markets, Shipwreck Gallery and Museums on foot, bike or via the free city bus.
Also convenient, the main Fremantle train station from Perth city is within walking distance of all of the iconic sites.
Although Perth is known for being relative flat, hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the Bibbulmun Track; one of the world’s great long distance walking trails.
When you’ve been travelling for days in a campervan, this is a great way to stretch your legs out while you explore some of Western Australia’s native bushland.
There are 49 campsites along the way with timber sleeping shelters, toilets, and tent sites. If you are only planning a day tour, you can picnic and return to the comfort of your campervan at night.
Why not make the most of your campervan and take a little road trip adventure!
Just a two hour drive out of Perth will find you at the Pinnacles, one of Perth’s most popular natural sites.
As you arrive in the ancient Nambung National Park you will instantly experience the eeriness of the pinnacle formations as you see the thousands of weathered rocks that rise from the yellow sand dunes –a truly spectacular sight!
While you’re at it, make a day of the trip and stop in at the fishing village of Cervantes, with its white sand beaches, coral reefs to explore, and a salt lake with living fossils, Lake Thetis.
For the wine lovers travelling through Perth, the Swan Valley wine region may well be the highlight of your trip!
The Swan Valley is Perth’s oldest wine region and thanks to the climate of the southwest, has been producing International standard wines for the last 180 years. Why not treat yourself a little and spend the day on one of the regions’ many wine tours?
Don’t worry though, the chocoholics and beer lovers will not be neglected, this region also specialises in gourmet chocolate with the likes of the Margaret River Chocolate Company and a range of boutique breweries.
And last but not least
A short drive from the wineries is the Caversham Wildlife Park & Zoo.
This park features Perth’s best collection of native animals, so that you and the kids can get up close and personal as you feed kangaroos, meet koalas and see an Australian farm show.
This is a must see for overseas travellers and families with small children.
